HOW IT WORKS
Follow the water in.
Water enters your home through one line. A point-of-entry softener treats it there, before it branches to the rooms you just explored.
Schematic route · illustrative · equipment not shown
01
Incoming water
Water arrives through one supply line, from the city main or a private well.
02
Treatment starts here
A suitable point-of-entry softener in the system bay treats water before the indoor branches being softened.
03
Out to the rooms
Softened water continues to the shower, kitchen and laundry. The water heater is supplied downstream.
TYPICAL CONFIGURATION · EDUCATIONAL
Inside a whole-home softening setup.
1Incoming water
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium.
→
2Softener · ion exchange
Ion exchange reduces the calcium and magnesium that cause hard-water scale. A control valve periodically regenerates the system using salt.
→
3Treated water to the home
Softened water continues to the branches being treated, including the water heater.
A softener is not a drinking-water purifier.
It addresses hardness. Taste, chlorine, sediment and specific contaminants may need different, model-appropriate treatment.
A typical configuration shown for education, not a rendering of the Prestige system. The system bay marks a possible location; it is not a rendering of the equipment. Based on USGS guidance.
Hardness is one water issue. Not the only one.
CaHARDNESS · CALCIUM & MAGNESIUM
Scale on fixtures and heating surfaces
Soap scum and reduced lather
Mineral deposits as water dries
→ Addressed by softening
?OTHER WATER ISSUES
Taste and odor
Chlorine
Sediment
Specific contaminants, such as iron, sulfur or manganese
→ Require separate treatment, chosen after a water analysis

Shower
Hardness and soap can leave residue on shower surfaces.
Kitchen
Water drying on fixtures can leave mineral deposits.
Laundry
Hardness minerals react with soap and affect lather.
Water heater
Heating hard water can form scale deposits.
Softening reduces hardness; it does not establish general contaminant removal. Existing deposits are not instantly removed.
