PRESTIGE H2O / WATER, UNDERSTOOD

Water softening, clearly explained.

An ion-exchange water softener reduces dissolved calcium and magnesium, the main minerals associated with hardness. It may be considered for hardness deposits and soap-related concerns. A useful proposal starts with a measured hardness result, household demand, service flow and regeneration requirements. Softening alone does not establish removal of other contaminants.

What it addresses

Hardness comes mainly from dissolved calcium and magnesium. Ion-exchange softening reduces these minerals. It can help limit new hardness deposits and the reaction between hardness and soap.

What it does not establish

Softening is not proof of broad contaminant removal. Do not assume a softener removes chlorine, lead, PFAS or microorganisms. Existing scale is not instantly removed.

What to review together

Ask for an equipment selection based on your measured water and household demand.

  • Hardness result and units
  • Service flow and regeneration settings
  • Salt replenishment, drain and power requirements
  • Bypass location and manufacturer care instructions

Questions and answers

Does a water softener remove chlorine?

Hardness reduction does not establish chlorine reduction. A proposed combination system needs separate documented filtration performance for the exact equipment and configuration.

How is a water softener sized?

Sizing considers measured hardness, daily water use, peak service flow and regeneration settings. A bedroom count or advertised grain capacity alone is not a complete selection method.

What ongoing care should I ask about?

Ask about salt replenishment, controller settings, bypass operation, drain requirements, any pretreatment and the manufacturer's care schedule for the selected model.

Will softening instantly remove existing scale?

Do not expect an immediate reversal of existing deposits. Discuss the current condition of fixtures and appliances separately from the system's intended reduction of incoming hardness.
