Filter and softener in one: 1.0 cu ft 8% resin over 0.5 cu ft standard carbon in a 10 x 54 tank with a black jacket and gravel underbedding. WS1 5-button downflow brining valve with 3/4 in x 1 in PVC elbows, 16 x 40 black brine tank. No weather cover. Lifetime warranty.
Softening resin
Hardness comes mainly from dissolved calcium and magnesium. Ion-exchange resin in the softener tank exchanges those minerals as water passes through, which is why softening treats hardness for every tap downstream.
