Hard Water Spots and Scale: What to Check

Spots and deposits can prompt a hardness check. Measure incoming water before selecting a softener, and treat existing deposits or damaged fixtures as a separate maintenance question.

Observe the pattern

Record where deposits appear and whether they return after cleaning. Heated water and evaporating droplets can leave mineral deposits, but an observation is not a complete chemical analysis. Use it to frame a hardness test rather than a contaminant claim.

Test before sizing

Ask for a dated hardness measurement with units, taken before any existing softener. A reading after treatment is useful for a different question: how that treatment is performing. Keep the two sampling points clearly labeled.

Separate incoming water from existing damage

A new softener is intended to reduce incoming hardness. It does not establish instant removal of previous deposits or repair appliances. Follow fixture and appliance care instructions and discuss an existing plumbing problem separately.

Use the result in a proposal

Ask how measured hardness, water use and peak demand set the model and regeneration plan. Include salt replenishment, bypass operation and drain requirements in the ownership discussion.
